IT-AI vs RustDesk

IT-AI is self-hosted, AI-native remote support — you run the hub, and an open-source agent (AGPL-3.0, signed and attested) runs on each machine. An AI assistant inspects a device read-only, explains the problem in plain language, and proposes a curated fix — flush DNS, restart a service, kill a process, clear temp, empty the recycle bin — that runs only after a human clicks Apply. On top of that: remote control, an interactive shell, checksummed file transfer, live A–F device health, a reverse-tunnel relay, and an MCP-native fleet you can drive from your own AI. Free and self-hosted; you bring your own Anthropic API key.

RustDesk is an excellent open-source, self-hosted remote desktop — the OSS TeamViewer alternative, and a sibling to IT-AI in ethos. It's AGPL-3.0, self-hosts its own relay server, is cross-platform with mature mobile clients, and gives you a polished, lightweight 1:1 screen-control experience backed by an active community. Credit where it's due: for pure remote desktop, RustDesk is superb. Its scope is remote desktop — it is not an RMM and has no AI. So this is “great open-source remote desktop” versus “AI-native self-hosted remote support plus light RMM.”

IT-AI and RustDesk agree on the things that matter most to self-hosters — both are open source, both self-host, and both use a relay so devices dial out with no inbound ports. The difference is scope. RustDesk is a focused, mature 1:1 remote desktop. IT-AI adds an AI diagnose-then-approval-gated-fix layer, live fleet health and compliance, and MCP-native control — while being newer at the pure remote-desktop craft that RustDesk has polished for years.

The verdict. RustDesk is a superb, lighter choice if all you need is self-hosted 1:1 screen control — it's mature, polished, open source, and has native mobile apps IT-AI does not yet offer. Choose IT-AI when you want the AI diagnose-and-fix layer with a human clicking Apply, live fleet health and compliance scoring, and MCP-native control across the whole fleet. These two share a philosophy — open source, self-hosted, no vendor cloud — and simply aim at different jobs.
